Making a contribution to the current debate on the future of European environmental policy, this seminar will focus on the role of regional authorities and protected areas in biodiversity conservation. It will investigate, with concrete examples, the fact that much of the work on biodiversity conservation, is done at local level, and that regional governments and protected areas have progressively developed strong partnerships, which play a particularly beneficial role in environmental governance.
The seminar is being organised jointly by the Region of Saxony Anhalt (Germany), the Valencian Region (Spain) and the EUROPARC Federation. The seminar has been organised as part of the ongoing celebrations during the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010 and fittingly preceeds this year’s Green Week in Brussels (1-4 June), the largest annual conference on European environment policy, which will also be focused on the topic of biodiversity.
During the seminar there will be contributions from:
- The Ministry of the Environment - Valencia Region, Spain
- The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment - Federal State of Saxony Anhalt
- The EUROPARC Federation Director, Carol Ritchie
- Eurosite Director, Neil McIntosh
- The Biosphere Reserve Mittelelbe - Saxony Anhalt, Germany
- Hortobagy National Park - Hungary
- Conclusions from the European Commission - DG Environment
A programme with further details will be available soon on www.europarc.org.
