Update from Countdown 2010, May 2010 - UICN

Dear Countdown 2010 partners, dear readers,

31 May 2010. The first five months of 2010 have passed. Only a few months are left to the end of the Countdown 2010 initiative. Yet, excitement is still high. Since the beginning of 2010, 50 new partners have joined the initiative and committed to contribute to biodiversity conservation.

On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, Countdown 2010 launched a new project – collecting hundreds of biodiversity cards to form a large photo mosaic to be displayed at major international events. Write your message and send us your picture! It is simple, just check here. Countdown 2010 will be present at Green Week with a stand where biodiversity messages will be collected.

The 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP10) in October in Japan will host a new international prize for biodiversity. The AEON Environmental Foundation of Japan in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Japan Ministry of the Environment, an IUCN Member, and the United Nations University will award individuals that have made outstanding contributions in promoting the implementation of the objectives of the CBD. IUCN is contributing to the initiative by publicizing it through its large expert network and supporting applications. Find out more.

This issue of the Countdown 2010 newsletter focuses on the importance of science in biodiversity conservation in light of the recent meeting of SBSSTA. In the issue you will find out about the latest publication of the CBD on the global status of biodiversity – Global Biodiversity Outlook 3 – and much more.

Enjoy reading!
