The first such Seminar entitled “The Price of Nature” will be held at the Gut Siggen on the Northern coast of Germany this July. It will take forward the information we received from Pavan Sudhev at our conference in Sweden last year about the economics of ecosystems and biodiversity and further explore the wilderness and intrinsic values of the natural and cultural heritage we protect.
At the seminar we will consider what practical support is needed in describing the value of our protected areas, whilst too ascribing an economic value to the ecosystem services they provide for society. It will bring together those working on the economic aspects of ecosystem system services management with those pursuing the wilderness agenda. The two days will combine presentations from across Europe, with participatory workshops to enable the exchange of experience, new ideas, and actual examples that can be utilised and developed in individual organisations. We also hope to come away from the seminar with ideas from members about how to take this topic forward in the Federation.
If you are wondering what is meant by an ecosystem service, if you want to know better how to show the economic value of the work you do, or if you are concerned that we are losing sight of the intrinsic value of the natural world and want to preserve and mange wilderness in Europe, then join the discussion and be part of the process of developing that vision.
The Seminar will be held in English and runs from the evening of Wednesday 21st until the afternoon of Friday 23rd July. The event, the seminar, all accommodation and meals, is free to EUROPARC members. Travel is not covered and will need to be paid for by the participants. The price for non members is 150€. Non-members will be allocated places if they are not fully taken up by members.
A full programme and details will be issued soon but as places are limited, we advise you to book your place now by emailing Morwenna Parkyn at m.parkyn@europarc.org with your name, organisation and contact details.
This is an excellent opportunity for members unable to attend the annual conference to still obtain the benefits of international collaboration and for them to participate in shaping the future of protected area policy in Europe.
Kind regards,
